I was very saddened to hear that Nick had died. I am presently in Australia and therefore unable to attend today’s service which I very much regret since I would dearly like to have paid my last respects to a man whom I greatly admired. Nick’s attitude to his illness, which he knew would take his life, was nothing short of remarkable and reminded me so much of how Roy Castle gave us all such a wonderful example of how to live and die with lung cancer. They had much in common. Both were brave and courageous individuals who battled valiantly against a dreadful disease but never lost their spirit or their sense of humour or their determination to make it different for those who would follow them along the same path. Consequently they had a multitude of friends and admirers and they were greatly loved, not just by their nearest and dearest but by the many people who knew them well. Roy Castle was a great man and so was Nick Pope. There were many significant ways in which Nick helped Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation but, for me, Nick’s whole approach to his disease and his intense desire to help others with lung cancer was exemplified on the day when his friends at Wallasey Golf Club helped him to put on a superb golf day for the charity. He was clearly very ill and had very little physical energy but his inner strength was such that he got out and about all over the course to say hello and encourage the players and then attended the evening Dinner for much longer than he really ought to have done and, not only that, but, late in the evening, he gave a wonderful, stimulating, inspiring and unforgettable speech which totally ensured the success of the whole event. Oh, how we will miss him! Everyone at the Roy Castle Foundation and, more importantly, everyone whom the Foundation exists to help, both now and in the future, owe him a real debt of gratitude for his loyal, steadfast and truly effective support. Thank you, Nick. You will not be forgotten. Professor Ray Donnelly MBE FRCS Founder and President Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation
